So, there I was, sipping an ice-cool beer at the bar mulling over in my mind Australia's 203 run win over Scotland. Just a few hours earlier, we had witnessed a magnificent knock of 113 from the Aussie captain Ricky Ponting while their veteran pace bowler Glenn McGrath had taken three wickets.
Even in such decisive defeat, a Scottish fan can appreciate something pretty special although our own Colin Smith had given us something to cheer about with his 51 runs.
McGrath demolished Scotland then shared a few jokes with fans |
While ordering another bottle of the local brew - around here they reckon it's the best and only beer in the world - I noticed a tall, angular-looking man climb on to the bar stool next to me.
Despite the baseball cap being pulled down to cover his eyes, there was no disguising his identity. It was Glenn McGrath and alongside him just happened to be Ricky Ponting.
Two legends in the sport of cricket unwinding but if it was a quiet night they were looking for, they had come to the wrong bar.
Within minutes, they were surrounded by our very own kilted-warriors - yes, it's still the favoured attire even in this searing heat - swapping stories of the day and posing for photographs.
While Ponting has a slightly more reserved manner, McGrath was loving it. You just have to witness the banter between him and supporters of both sides when he's fielding on the boundary.
At the other end of the bar, I could see Dougie Brown and Gavin Hamilton also enjoying a night off after a hard day in the field.
Although Brown had been hit for 86 runs, he did take the wicket of Adam Gilchrist before making 19 with the bat.
And it's this coming together of players and travelling supporters to talk and reminisce about cricket that makes it such a great game.
My own hotel is packed with Scots, Aussies, South Africans and Dutch people and whether in the pool, at the bar or in the restaurant, the talk is all about cricket.
Some will remain in the tournament longer than others but the memories being gathered now will last a lifetime.
