Footitt, 22, suffered with a bulging disc for several months and had surgery when the problem failed to clear up.

Director of cricket Mick Newell said: "We hoped that rest and injections would mean he could get through but it wasn't improving as we hoped.

"He's on the mend and is swimming and starting gentle exercises, but won't be available until May."
