Trent Bridge will be transformed when work is completed |
Nottinghamshire's plans for a new 8.2m stand at Trent Bridge have been approved by the borough council. The West Wing and Parr Stand will be replaced, increasing the capacity of the Test venue from 15,000 to 17,500.
Permanent floodlights and a new block which will house match officials, a replay screen and electronic scoreboard are also part of the development.
Work will begin in September and Notts hope to have it completed in time for the first international there in 2008.
The county have yet to secure finance for the project but chief executive Derek Brewer said the plans were crucial to the long-term future of international cricket at the ground.
"There is now intense competition from other venues wanting to stage England matches, and the ECB has set high standards which we are determined to exceed," he said.
"As the third oldest Test ground in the world, it's a local treasure, but reputation alone is not enough.
"We have to prove to the ECB that we are still striving to upgrade facilities - and boost the capacity - and the exciting programme we have planned will take this venue to the next level."
