Northants have signed South African spinner Nicky Boje as a replacement overseas player for Johan van der Wath. The county moved for the 34-year-old after seamer van der Wath was named in South Africa's World Twenty20 squad.
Boje, who retired from international cricket in December 2006, played 43 Tests and 115 ODIs and played county cricket with Nottinghamshire in 2002.
"He brings a wealth of experience into our team and a proven track record with bat and ball," coach David Capel said.
"The search to replace van der Wath with an overseas fast bowler has proved a difficult one as many of the world's finest cricketers are either competing in the World Twenty20 or have previously been registered by other first class counties.
"With the restricted availability of Monty Panesar and likelihood of playing on used pitches more favourable to spin bowling we have decided to recruit Boje's services.
"He will also be able to greatly assist our younger cricketers and in particular Graeme White as a slow left-arm bowler."
Boje took 100 wickets in Tests and 96 in one-day internationals, and registered two centuries in the shorter international format.
