Ganguly is out of favour with India coach Greg Chappell |
Northamptonshire have secured the short-term signing of former India captain Sourav Ganguly. The 33-year-old was left out of India's squad for the Tests in the West Indies, and will now deputise for Australian batsman Chris Rogers for five weeks.
Northants chief executive Mark Tagg said: "He was holding a little hope of being selected for India. No disrespect to him but we're delighted he wasn't!"
Ganguly is expected to make his debut for Northants in a C&G game on 25 June.
The left-hander was sacked as India captain last October and later eased out of both the Test and one-day sides.
He has played county cricket on two previous occasions - for Lancashire in 2000 and Glamorgan last summer.
And Northants believe he could form a match-winning partnership with South African Lance Klusener in the Twenty20 Cup, the group stages of which will take place while Rogers is away with Australia's A team.
"This coincides with our Twenty20 campaign and having a world class opening batsmen will be a big help to us," Tagg added.
