Northamptonshire have appointed batsman David Sales as their new captain for the 2004 season. The 26-year-old replaces Australian Mike Hussey, who decided to take a break from cricket this summer.
Hussey led Northants to promotion in both the Frizzell County Championship and National League in 2003.
Sales said: "I was hoping to be offered the job when it became available and now I'm looking forward to taking it on."
He added: "It'll certainly be a challenge. We've had a couple of good captains recently in Matthew Hayden and Mike Hussey, and I hope I can follow in their footsteps."
Obviously Mike got it right last year with the way he led the guys. We will have a pretty young side this season - but I know we're all very keen to succeed."
Sales, who burst on the county scene in 1996 with a double-century on his first-class debut for Northants against Worcestershire at Kidderminster, took charge for two championship matches last April before Hussey's return from duty with Australia's A team.
He will work closely with coach Kepler Wessels, but the club have not appointed an official vice-captain.
Cricket chairman John Scopes added: "David is a committed Northamptonshire player who has been with us for 10 years now. He's a dedicated professional, and we're sure he will do a good job."
