Udal will not enter IPL auction

Shaun Udal was a key part of the Twenty20 Cup success.

Middlesex captain Shaun Udal says he will turn his back on the chance to appear in the IPL in 2009.

Udal, 40, will commit to his job at Lord's for the entire summer and reject a lucrative short-term deal in India.

He said: "I've decided, after some soul searching and advice from people I trust, not to enter myself into the auction for a variety of reasons.

"One of the main reasons being the Middlesex captaincy, which is something that I really treasure."

The former Hampshire spinner was brought out of retirement by Middlesex last winter and handed the captaincy towards the end of the 2008 season.

Speaking to the club's website, he added: "If I did get taken on by one of the IPL franchises I would have been coming back after a month or so of the season and it would have an unsettling effect on the squad.

"I've always preached loyalty and hopefully now I've shown it by not going down the IPL route.

"I truly believe that everything being put into place at Middlesex on and off the pitch promises a bright future and I really look forward to playing a major part in that.

"Middlesex were kind enough to offer me a contract extension to the end of the 2010 season and I feel it's only right that I am as loyal to them as they have been to me."
