Smith spent nine seasons with Kent |
Former England batsman Ed Smith has left Kent to move to Middlesex after agreeing a two-year contract. Smith, who played three Tests in 2003, will boost a Middlesex batting line-up weakened when Andrew Strauss became an England regular last summer.
"I had many happy seasons at Kent, but I needed a new challenge and a fresh start," he told the Middlesex website.
Smith, 27, spent nine seasons in Canterbury, scoring 8690 first-class runs at an average of 40.79.
But he was involved in controversy earlier this year when a group of senior players reportedly refused to accept his decisions as stand-in captain.
Smith follows the opposite path to seamer Simon Cook, who left Middlesex to sign with Kent earlier this week.
"Ed will be a major addition to our squad," said Middlesex chief executive Vinny Codrington.
"He has joined a talented and happy side, and believes that by starting a new chapter of his career with us, that he can help us win things and push to regain his place in the England set up."
