![]() | Saturday, 4 May, 2002, 09:46 GMT 10:46 UK Fraser set for swansong ![]() Fraser takes a wicket against Warwickshire Middlesex captain Angus Fraser has no regrets about his decision to bring his county career to end end as he prepares to make his final appearance at Lord's. After 18 years of stalwart service, Fraser will step out at the home of cricket for the last time in Sunday's B&H Cup match against Sussex. He will play once more at Hampshire's Rose Bowl on Monday before putting away his bowling boots in order to begin a new job as cricket correspondent of The Independent newspaper. Fraser has suffered injury problems in recent years and told BBC Radio 5 Live the time was right for him to bow out. "It's a mental thing more than anything. "Sometimes when you've got to play for a period of time, your body feels strong until near the end of it. "But knowing the end is this weekend, I think it's feeling the aches and pains more than it would have done if I was preparing for a full summer," he said.
"I've had two first-class games this summer and bowled 27 overs in a day, which is fine, it's just the next two days you are struggling to be as competitive as you'd like to be." Fraser has taken 886 first-class wickets during his career at an average of 27.80. He played 46 Tests for England between 1989 and 1998, claiming 177 wickets, and was made an MBE four years ago for his services to the game. "I'm very proud and pleased with my international career. I suppose you look back and think 'Maybe I could have played another 15-20 Test matches if selection had gone my way', but I don't look back with any bitterness. "I feel priveleged to have had such a wonderful 18 years in cricket," said Fraser. "The game's fun but the lifestyle is great fun as well and that's the thing that's going to be hard to replace - the camaraderie in the dressing room and the crack you have amongst a group of young people who've all got the same love." |
