Boon launches new era for Foxes
Mohammad Asif
Leicestershire are expecting plenty of wickets from Mohammad Asif
Tim Boon is determined to lay the foundations for "sustained success" at Leicestershire after returning to the club as senior coach.

Boon has been a key member of England's backroom team for the past few years, working as video analyst and assistant to Duncan Fletcher.

And the 44-year-old plans to create a similar "no excuse culture" among the players at Grace Road.

"There is some awesome potential here," Boon told BBC Radio Leicester.

His partnership with new skipper Jeremy Snape will be crucial to transforming the fortunes of a team which won only three of their 16 Championship Division Two games last summer.

Their form in one-day cricket does, however, give Boon something to build on.

The Foxes were just two points and a small run rate deficit short of the promotion places in the Totesport League last summer and reached Twenty20 Cup finals day for the second year running.

Boon is hoping expert advice from physiologists and movement alignment specialists can help the players achieve a "two to five per cent" improvement in their level of performance.

"It's about running between the wickets harder, it's about moving off the mark quicker to the right or the left (in the field), and taking the catches.

"It's little adjustments to technique, it's about getting the ball in the right place more often, it's about knocking the stumps over (with throws) more often. It's the fine tuning and attention to detail I'm looking for," he said.

The loss of senior players like Phil DeFreitas, Ottis Gibson and Charl Willoughby means Boon will have no option but to dip into the club's pool of talented youngsters, but it is a prospect he relishes.

"It's about getting the balance right. There's no point in throwing the youngsters in all at once but I do intend to drip-feed them in.

"By the same token, I can't have a team of 33 to 35 year olds all playing at the same time, there has to be a crossover.

"It's something I'll monitor, but it's about winning games of cricket and bringing people in at the right time," said Boon.

The signing of Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Asif for the first half of the summer will increase Leicestershire's firepower.

"I saw him bowl in Lahore for the Pakistan A team when he took nine wickets against England. I had a quick chat with the chairman and we signed him.

"He's come on in leaps and bounds and is performing superbly for Pakistan," Boon commented.

"I was looking at Munaf Patel as well, but he'll be with the Indian team in Sri Lanka in August, so that rules him out."

India batsman Dinesh Mongia should be available for the entire season and is keen to show the Leicestershire crowd what he is capable of after a poor return of 627 runs in 10 Championship matches in 2005.

"He's performed superbly in India (this winter) and scored several hundreds. He's very keen to play for Leicestershire and get back into the Indian team. We'll help him as much as we can," Boon added.
