Laxman has played 80 Tests and 86 ODIs for India |
India batsman VVS Laxman is set to join Lancashire this season after the Test series with England ends on 13 August. The 2002 Wisden Cricketer of the Year, who has a Test average of 42, will gain his first experience of county cricket subject to Indian board approval.
He would replace Australian Brad Hodge, who is returning home for a training camp ahead of the ICC World Twenty20.
"It's something I've wanted to do for a long time and hopefully I will play my part in success," the 32-year-old said.
Lancashire manager Mike Watkinson explained that the club were keen to bolster their batting line-up because of September's Twenty20 spectacular in South Africa.
"We are going to be without Brad Hodge for what looks like a significant period towards the end of the season," he said.
"With Mal Loye also likely to be involved in the Twenty20 World Cup, we could possibly be without two experienced batsman and we feel that Laxman will bring the quality needed at a crucial time of the season.
"I'm delighted that we have been able to secure a player of his pedigree."
