Chilton is looking forward to the challenge of leadership |
Mark Chilton will take over as captain of relegated Lancashire from Warren Hegg for the 2005 season. Former England wicket-keeper Hegg has relinquished the position he held for three years, but will continue as a player under Chilton's leadership.
Chilton, 28, made his Red Rose debut in 1997 and averaged 32.36 in 16 Championship matches in 2004.
Former Australia batsman Stuart Law, who hopes to earn British citizenship this winter, will be vice-captain.
Chilton said: "It's a great honour to be offered the captaincy of Lancashire. I am looking forward to working alongside the management team to further our success.
"I will be a thoughtful captain, probably, and there is a lot of experience in the side I can look to.
"It's great to have Stuart Law as vice-captain. He is the ideal man to have by my side and we have a great relationship both on and off the field
"I'd like to think that being captain will bring out the best in me and I will approach it in a positive manner."
Chilton also praised the efforts of outgoing captain Hegg, adding: "Warren and I also have a good relationship and he did a great job in the three years he was in charge.
"We will look at all the competitions as realistic goals and we will be aiming to get back into Division One, where this club belongs."
Hegg, who has spent 19 seasons with the county, said: "Now the time is right to step down and concentrate on helping the team recapture its position in Division One. "
"The new captain will have my 100% support and commitment."
Cricket manager Mike Watkinson added: "Warren has done a great job but now we look forward to 2005 with Mark in charge. He has excellent qualities in key areas and with Stuart at his side will be well equipped to take the team forward."
