Saggers will not let England forget
By Martin Gough

Name the seven bowlers who took part in England's unprecedented seven-match sweep of their summer Tests in 2004.

Martin Saggers

The first four are easy - Andrew Flintoff, Ashley Giles, Matthew Hoggard and Steve Harmison played in all seven.

Simon Jones opened the summer before succumbing to a foot injury, and James Anderson appeared in the last four, although he kept a low profile.

Need a clue? He took a wicket with his first Test delivery on English soil, bowling New Zealand's Mark Richardson in the Headingley victory.

Give up? Kent's Martin Saggers certainly won't, despite turning 33 next month and having been forced to rest all winter recovering from a knee injury.

"I'd love to play in an Ashes series and my goal is to get back in the England side," he tells BBC Sport.

"People say I'm too old but I only made my debut for England at 31. I don't see myself as past it.

"The way the England bowlers have performed in the last 18 months, they have a strong nucleus but it's up to me to show I belong."

I still have the hunger and the passion of a 16-year-old

Had Saggers believed the pessimists, he would never have become a regular county player, let alone win three Test caps.

He was released by Durham in 1998, after two years at the Riverside, and it was only a spate of injuries at Canterbury that saw him establish his place in the Kent side.

After that slow start, through Minor Counties cricket with Norfolk, Saggers believes there is plenty still to come.

"Because I came into the game late - I was 24 when I first played for Durham - I didn't bowl the overs in my teens that others did," he says.

"I still have the hunger and the passion of a 16-year-old."

"It's disappointing that the injury came when it did because I would have loved to have played against West Indies and then toured South Africa."

England managed without him but a bowler who took 253 Championship wickets over the previous four seasons could easily have brought Kent the title.

Even so, a daunting batting line-up and a young attack combined for seven victories - two more than anyone else.

SAGGERS' CHAMP'SHIP RECORD
2004: Kent finish 2nd
6 matches, 15 wkts at 27.33
2003: Kent finish 4th
15 matches, 54 wkts at 23.96
2002: Kent finish 3rd
15 matches, 79 wkts at 21.54
2001: Kent finish 3rd
16 matches, 63 wkts at 24.12
2000: Kent finish 6th
14 matches, 57 wkts at 20.14
But dressing-room in-fighting saw a cloud form over Canterbury for much of the second half of the year and saw a post-season clearout.

Director of cricket Graham Ford heads a new South African trio that includes all-rounder Andrew Hall - replacing Aussie Andrew Symonds - and batsman Martin van Jaarsveld.

"Graham is relaxed and knowledgeable and it's great to have him around," says Saggers, who has spent several winters playing club cricket in South Africa.

"He's involved in every aspect, from the grassroots to the first team.

"But we have a good coaching structure already in place and the veterans play a part."

A real plus from last season was the performance of pace bowlers Simon Cusden, Robbie Joseph and Matthew Dennington.

They combined for 41 wickets in a patched up attack, taking the chance that Saggers grabbed five years ago.

"It was Dean Headley and Julian Thompson being injured that gave me the opportunity," he recalls.

"The next breed came through last year and they did a fantastic job."

It is almost as if his career has come full circle, but Saggers will make sure he is not forgotten, by Kent or by England.
