Porterfield says Ireland can be in the top 10 for the next World Cup |
Ireland captain William Porterfield is confident they can qualify for future World Cups despite the move to cut the number of teams to 10. "We have to accept the ICC's decision," said the Irish skipper. "The way we are playing, and as long as we keep progressing, I would back ourselves to finish in the top 10." Ireland, out of contention for the quarter-finals, play their last match in the 14-team tournament against the Netherlands on Friday. Porterfield said he had been encouraged by all aspects of his side's performances. The Gloucestershire batsman said: "We have had a lot of comments on the way we have fielded. It is one of the things we have worked hard on and pride ourselves on, especially our ground fielding. "The way we have bowled as well, no team has really taken us apart, and with the bat we feel we have put ourselves in winning positions and just have not managed to pull that through. "We have had some really good partnerships, some 100-plus and 90-plus partnerships which are key in one-day cricket, but we need another 60-70 partnership and a couple of 30-40 partnerships. "That is what gets you up to winning totals in this format, 280s and up and around 300. "That is what we have got to do and we are not far off that."
