Ireland started their defence of the European Championship with a comfortable eight-wicket win over Norway in Dublin on Friday. Norway lost their last seven wickets for just 28 runs as they were bowled out for 119 in the 44th over. Gary Kidd took four wickets for 25 while his Waringstown club colleague Kyle McCallan had figures of 2-28. Opener Gary Wilson was 47 not out when Ireland got to their 120 target for the loss of two wickets in the 23rd over. Reinhardt Strydom (21) and Paul Stirling (5) were the men out. The tournament will also provide the Irish, Scots and Dutch with important preparation for the World Twenty20 Qualifier which begins in Belfast on 2 August.
