Dave Langford-Smith starred in last year's World Cup

Ireland bowler David Langford-Smith has announced his retirement from international cricket.

Langford-Smith has recently started a new business and he said that his "workload" had forced him to take the decision to quit with immediate effect.

"It has been a tough decision for me, but one I had to make," he said.

"I've reached a stage in my life where I have to think about my family and it's difficult when you are away from home so much."

Langford-Smith added that playing for the Irish team had been "the greatest sporting experience I could have ever wished for".

"I am proud to have been a part of such a successful team, both on and off the field."

The 31-year-old played 43 times for Ireland after making his debut against Hampshire in April 2006, and he played a major role in the country's World Cup exploits last year.

He is Ireland's leading wicket-taker in one-day internationals (25), and had a best bowling return of 5-45 against Bermuda in 2007.

Last month, Ireland captain Trent Johnston announced that he was taking a break from international cricket and it is possible that he may not play any more one-day games for the team.
