Rankin celebrates after dismissing Ed Joyce early on in Guyana |
Ireland pace bowler Boyd Rankin hopes he will be a Derbyshire regular in the summer after impressing against Test opposition in the World Cup. The 6ft 8in 22-year old knocked over England openers Ed Joyce and Michael Vaughan, having taken three wickets in the shock win over Pakistan.
"What I'm aiming for is to get in the first team at Derbyshire," said Rankin.
"No-one could believe I got Ed Joyce first ball, it was unbelievable. To see the stump knocked back was great."
Cramp prevented Rankin from bowling his final three overs in Guyana on Friday, but Ireland captain Trent Johnston believes his natural attributes and attitude should guarantee him a bright future.
Johnston said: "He deserves to do well, he's a good young kid who works hard and has the ability to go places.
"He bowled very well yesterday in his opening spell and unfortunately he couldn't come back.
"It is not easy when you have your opening bowler bowling so well, he's only bowled six or seven overs and it would have been nice to bring him back at the end.
"Perhaps we will have to put him on a drip two days before the next game!"
Having lost their leading wicket-taker in 2006, Steffan Jones, to Somerset, Derbyshire will be watching Rankin's progress in the Caribbean with enthusiasm.
The county's bowling coach Mike Hendrick coached Ireland with distinction in the 1990s.
