More shocks to come?

Ireland all-rounder Kyle McCallan says his team are not surprised by their success at the World Cup and believe they can cause even more shocks.

The Irish stunned Pakistan at Sabina Park by three wickets on St Patrick's Day and are almost certain to qualify for the Super 8 stage.

"We're not satisfied with what we've done so far, we're looking to take more scalps now.

"I'll be honest here and say we did think we could do this," he said.

"Coach Adie Birrell has instilled a sense of belief that we're capable of creating an upset," the 31-year-old told BBC Sport.

McCallan and his team-mates went into the tournament on the back of four defeats in five games at the World Cricket League in Nairobi.

In Kenya they competed against fellow associate members of the International Cricket Council, but in Jamaica they have now held full member Zimbabwe to a tie and beaten the fourth-ranked one-day team.

The physical education teacher at Grosvenor Grammar school in Belfast, who took two wickets in the victory, said it was the "perfect response" to critics who suggested they should not be playing in the tournament.

"People are entitled to their opinion but we believe we're good enough to be here and it's imperative to our cricket to have something to aspire to," he insisted.

"It would be a sorry day when cricket was restricted to nine or 10 teams and hopefully we've done our bit to push the associate cause.

"I know there have been some big defeats but against Pakistan, one of the big Test teams, we've proved we're capable of beating anybody."

McCallan and most of the other members of the squad will require more understanding from their employers if, as seems likely, they qualify for the next phase of the tournament, which runs from 27 March to 21 April.

Ireland have three points from their opening two games and face West Indies on Friday in the final group game.

"Personally I'm due to go back on 1 April and will have to ring the headmistress and ask her to give me another few weeks off," McCallan said.

"But it's great prestige for the school where I work and for the rest of the employers. It's a massive thing for Irish cricket so let's take it further."

Until this week's heroics, the sport has struggled to attract attention in the Irish media and among sponsors, but the vice-captain believes that could be about to change.

McCallan said the whole squad was unlikely to go full-time but feels investment in future players is the way ahead.

"Money makes the world go round and unfortunately Irish sport is dominated by rugby soccer and Gaelic Games," he added.

"We're still a minority sport but this will hopefully give our new chief executive a chance to go out and gain the sort of financial backing to take Irish cricket further.

"We won the European championships at every level last year so Irish cricket is strong and the next few weeks will help it take off even further."
