Life without Shane Warne will take some getting used to especially when the team are under pressure and the team is in need of a moment of magic. Warne will be missing for the first time since 2000 (Getty Images) |
Obviously no Warne is a huge psychological boost to the teams that Hampshire come up against and the spin-bowling department looks thin without him and Shaun Udal. Greg Lamb, who was an occasional bowler in the past, now finds himself thrust into the role of number one. If it does not work for him then young Liam Dawson, a left-arm spinner who has impressed for the England under-19s in recent seasons, will get his chance. Hampshire's strength will be the new-ball partnership of Shane Bond and Chris Tremlett. It's the best in the championship by far. Bond though is only here for eight weeks and Tremlett needs to stay fit. If the duo works then Hampshire may find themselves in a good position come June and the confidence gained may carry them for the rest of the season. New captain Dimi Mascarenhas will have learnt from Warne though, and he will gain strength as the season unfolds. Nic Pothas and John Crawley should offer him a lot of support. The batting has not been strengthened and again needs to prove itself. Crawley and Michael Carberry will be relied upon. Michael Lumb in his second season will be looking to improve his consistancy. All in all I think Hampshire will be pleased to avoid relegation from division one in the championship and if they can improve in the Twenty20 competition, and qualify for the knockout stages then they will consider the summer to have been a good one.
