Stuart Clark could be a huge threat for county batsmen in 2007

The 31-year-old, who spent a year with Middlesex in 2005, took 26 wickets in the 5-0 Ashes demolition and has been added to Australia's World Cup squad.

Hants skipper Shane Warne, who retired from Tests this year but will continue in county action, was key to the move.

"This is a once in a lifetime chance with the added benefit to play cricket with such a cricket legend and personal friend as Shane," Clark enthused.

Warne was full of praise for his compatriot's talents, and predicts great success for the seamer in English county conditions.

"He's probably close to the number one fast bowler in the world at the moment," the spin maestro told BBC Radio Solent.

"He's been sensational, he took 8-58 the other day for New South Wales (against Western Australia), including a hat-trick.

"He's a Glenn McGrath type bowler, but probably a yard quicker. The club will really enjoy having him here."

Hants first-team coach Paul Terry also looked forward to welcoming the paceman into the ranks, as the team seek to improve on their third place in Division One of the Championship in 2006.

"Stuart's performances in the last year at international level have elevated him to one of the leading bowlers currently playing in the world, so it's a great signing for Hampshire," Terry said.

"He will give us an extra cutting edge and his experience will be invaluable for the younger bowlers in our squad."
