Watson has enjoyed a good Australian season with the bat |
Hampshire have signed Australian all-rounder Shane Watson as cover for their overseas pair Shane Warne and Michael Clarke. The Tasmanian will cover for Warne and Clarke's international duties and in the event of injury to either player.
The 22-year-old has played 23 one-day internationals for Australia and regularly features in their A sides.
He was Australia's outstanding performer at the Under 19 World Cup of 1999-2000 in Sri Lanka.
He had a profitable season for Tasmania in 2003/4, scoring 983 runs in 10 matches at an average of 52.23, including four centuries.
Both Warne and Clarke are expected to be called upon extensively during the English county season as Australia tour Zimbabwe in May and host Sri Lanka in June.
