Clarke has appeared in 10 one-day internationals for Australia |
Australian rising star Michael Clarke is to spend the 2004 county season in county cricket with Hampshire. The 22-year-old has appeared in 10 one-day internationals and is viewed as Steve Waugh's heir in the Test team.
Also a useful left-arm spinner he will team up with veteran leg-spinner Shane Warne at the Rose Bowl.
Hampshire team manager Paul Terry said: Michael has begun to make a significant mark already at the top level with Australia.
"And I'm sure the Hampshire supporters will warm to the brilliance of his play."
Another young Australian batsman, Simon Katich, enjoyed a successful season with the county in 2003.
"We are naturally delighted that Michael has agreed to be our overseas player next season," club chairman Rod Bransgrove said.
"He is undoubtedly one of the brightest new stars of international cricket and we are certain that his considerable playing style will prove highly popular at The Rose Bowl."
