Lewis to undergo ankle operation
Jon Lewis
Lewis did not feature at the World Cup in the Caribbean
Gloucestershire skipper Jon Lewis is expected to be sidelined for around two months because of an ankle problem.

The 31-year-old England seamer, who did not play a World Cup match, needs surgery on the persistent injury.

"This has been dragging on for several months and we need to get him right before he plays again," coach Mark Alleyne told the Western Daily Press.

"It's extremely frustrating but two months is a worst case scenario," a philosophical Lewis said.

Lewis spent a year on the Northamptonshire staff in 1994 before joining Gloucestershire, where he won his county cap in 1998 and was made captain last season.

His international career began with a three-wicket haul against Bangladesh at The Oval in 2005 and a spell of 4-36 against Australia in the Commonwealth Bank Series last winter earned him a place in the World Cup squad.

"My ankle wasn't too bad when I was at the World Cup with England, but then my workload wasn't that great," he said.

"Now I'm back playing county cricket, the workload is that much better and it won't stand up.

"It's a far from ideal situation for Gloucestershire, who are losing their captain and one of their best bowlers."
