New captain Alviro Petersen wants positive Glamorgan

New captain Alviro Petersen says Glamorgan must remain "positive" after the turmoil at the Welsh county.

Petersen was controversially appointed skipper in place of Jamie Dalrymple which prompted Matthew Maynard quit as director of cricket.

Dalrymple soon followed and then went president Peter Walker.

"It's obviously not nice to see a team going through what Glamorgan's gone through the last couple of months," Petersen told BBC Sport Wales.

"There's a healing process at the moment.

"It's important that we stay positive and take this team forward and make sure that Glamorgan reach the heights of their potential."

Glamorgan's troubles started when Dalrymple reacted to being replaced as captain by 30-year-old South African Petersen in November, while Maynard's role was superseded by Colin Metson as the new head of coaching.

In an open letter to members, Glamorgan chief executive Alan Hamer said a strategic change was necessary.

The Glamorgan chief pointed to a lack of success on the field as the reason for the overhaul and claimed "the strategic changes would have been implemented" even if the Welsh county had gained promotion to Division One of the County Championship.

Vice-president Nigel Roberts also tendered his resignation before later withdrawing it and Maynard's son, Tom, said his position in the Welsh side's squad was untenable after his father left the county.

Petersen is one of only three South African players to reach a century on their Test debut, when he scored 100 against India at Eden Gardens, Kolkata in February, 2010.

"I'm very confident," added Petersen. "If we make sure the basics are in place and everyone buy into what we're trying to achieve with the team.

"We need to play good cricket consistently and make sure our emotions stay on par with where we want it to be.

"I've got no doubt we'll play well as a team and individual performances will come into play and my greatest goal is to see some players from Glamorgan playing for England."
