Glamorgan ready to hit potential

Mark Wallace

Mark Wallace says Glamorgan must turn potential into winning cricket this summer after five barren seasons.

The Glamorgan wicket-keeper and new vice-captain is fed up with the Welsh club being the nearly men of the county cricket circuit.

"A lot more is expected of Glamorgan this year and it's up to us as players to perform," said Wallace.

Glamorgan open their campaign with a FP Trophy clash against Lancashire at Old Trafford on Sunday.

"Last year we were good at times, inconsistent a lot of the time. And it's time to stop that inconsistency and try to put in some more solid, consistent performances which we think we can do," Wallace said.

"It's a case of building. If we make strides from where we were last year then I think people can be happy, and look maybe to push on to win some more games and bring more winning cricket here."

This season Glamorgan are led by former England and Middlesex all-rounder Jamie Dalrymple.

He takes over from David Hemp, who left the club last season after captaining Glamorgan to just four County Championship wins in two years.

But Wallace is confident the county can be a bigger force than they have been in recent times.

"You can talk a bit too much... and actually forget we are in the business of performance," he said.

"We've got some talented young players. Our crop of five, six, seven young players have the potential to have long careers at Glamorgan and a few of them are in a position to actually put in some strong performances on the field.

"You can only get so far on potential. I think these lads have had some good years behind them on a learning curve.

"Hopefully, I think, they should show a bit more on the pitch this year. Everyone wants to move on in their career.

"We have a few lads like Ben Wright, Tom Maynard, James Harris. Speaking to them I know they want to put in some performances that will get them mentioned in higher circles.

"I think these lads can now cement places in the side. We have got five young batters and only two places in the side so they will be jockeying for places.

"Matt [Maynard, the Glamorgan director of cricket] said when he came in it was a three-year plan and this is year two of three of that process.

"We don't want to get carried away and say we are going to win this, that and the other. It's a case of building on some good things we did last year.

"I am vice-captain this year which is a huge honour and hopefully I can help Jamie in his first year.

"Jamie has come in with some new ideas. It's not a case of re-inventing the wheel - it's just Jamie has come in with a few new and different ideas.

"It's just a fresh voice. I think it's a case of developing on last year rather than changing things."
