Croft delight at 900-wicket mark

Glamorgan captain Robert Croft joined an exclusive club on Wednesday when he claimed his 900th first-class wicket.

The former England off-spinner reached the milestone on the second morning of the Championship match at Derby when he completed a five-wicket haul.

"Nine hundred wickets seemed a long way off when I got my first wicket against Graham Thorpe back in 1989," he said.

"But everybody's helped me so much through the years and I'm just happy to still be bowling well."

The 36-year-old is only the third England-qualified bowler currently playing county cricket to achieve the feat.

The others are Somerset's Andrew Caddick and Martin Bicknell of Surrey.

Croft started the day on 897 wickets and had Graeme Welch caught at mid-off in his first over.

Then in Croft's fourth over Steffan Jones was bowled as he played forward and then Ian Hunter had the distinction of becoming his 900th victim when he was beaten by the turn and bowled.

Croft, who finished with the outstanding figures of 5 for 56 from 34.5 overs, was surrounded by Glamorgan team-mates in the middle and then applauded from the field by players and spectators.

He now joins other Glamorgan legends such as Don Shepherd, Jack Mercer, Johnnie Clay, Malcolm Nash, Frank Ryan, Emrys Davies, Wilf Wooller and Steve Watkin, who all took more than 900 victims in their first-class career.
