Glamorgan welcome back Franklin
James Franklin
Glamorgan will hope Franklin can beef up their bowling attack
Glamorgan are confident New Zealand seam bowler James Franklin will be fit to join them this season after all.

Initial diagnosis suggested Franklin needed knee surgery to repair torn cartilage, but New Zealand Cricket has now said the injury is not serious.

Glamorgan coach John Derrick said: "He will come over in the next three or four days and we'll have him for a week or so to put him through his paces.

"We'll make a decision from that and hopefully it'll be good news."

On Wednesday Pakistan seamer Umar Gul said he was considering joining the county on a one-month deal ahead of his country's tour of England.

But with Franklin now seemingly given the all-clear, the 22-year-old Gul is unlikely to be required by the Welsh county.

Glamorgan chief executive Mike Fatkin admitted they were considering a number of players in case Franklin was not able to play.

"We'll give Franklin a few tests over the week but we need contingencies in case he's not right," Fatkin told BBC Sport.

"John Derrick has spoken to a lot of players."

On 9 May, it was announced Franklin would be unavailable for Glamorgan, and the county immediately began to seek a replacement.

That frantic search came to nothing, and so the 26-year-old's probable availability has come as a huge relief for Derrick.

He added: "I've spoken to him and he said he can guarantee 99.9% that everything is fine. He's desperate to come over and play some cricket for us.

"Two surgeons have seen him and said they are not going to operate because there is nothing worth operating on.

"He's clear of that but he obviously had some swelling during the (New Zealand) Test matches."

NZC has said Franklin would not benefit from an extended period of rest, but has insisted the injury be closely monitored during his stay in Wales.

If a deterioration in the knee is detected, Franklin will return to New Zealand for rest and surgery if required.
