Jones has targeted a spot on England's winter tour |
Glamorgan and England bowler Simon Jones made his long-awaited return from a career-threatening knee ligament injury on Wednesday. The 24-year-old fast bowler chose the inauspicious setting of Panteg Cricket Club to turn out for Glamorgan's second eleven, but he failed to gather a wicket against the Lancashire second string.
Jones' two four-over spells featured a number of no-balls and beamers that saw one Lancashire batsman forced to retire to the treatment table.
But English and Welsh cricket fans will have been pleased to see that his pace was intact and that his body carried him through a hot day in the field.
"As you'd expect he was a bit wayward but match bowling is a lot different to bowling in the nets," said former Glamorgan and England paceman Steve Watkin. "He didn't take a wicket but came on for a second spell later and bowled better.

"If he can get through the game and get the mindset right after the injury, that will be OK." Jones himself was content with the performance, that saw Lancashire finishing on 300 all out.
"It felt good, not everything went to plan but it was just good to be back with the boys," he said.
"Obviously some of the beamers weren't deliberate, but that's the way it goes sometimes."
Jones has targeted a spot on England's winter tour, something that coach Duncan Fletcher will welcome given his misfiring pace attack and the Test retirement of Darren Gough.
"I want to play for England again and if the chance comes along I will seize it with both hands," said Jones. "It was sad to see Gough retire but I'm in no rush and, at the moment, I am concentrating on building up my fitness."
Glamorgan seamer Andrew Davies also returned to action at Panteg, playing his first game since breaking his hand in June.
