Russell says Glamorgan have a bright future |
New Glamorgan chairman Paul Russell has denied rumours of financial insecurity at the club as he instigates ambitious plans for Sophia Gardens. Russell, the brother of Ebbw Vale RFC chairman Marcus Russell, has taken over from Gerard Elias at Glamorgan and sees his challenge in three specific areas: success on the field, financial security and the development of facilities.
By addressing these issues, Russell hopes that within two-to-three years he can secure a full England Test match at Sophia Gardens.
Russell acknowledges that Glamorgan are facing the same financial challenges as the rest of the county game, but bristles at suggestions that the club have been stymied by the situation.
We have in Sophia Gardens a considerable asset Glamorgan chairman Paul Russell |
"We are perfectly financially stable," Russell told BBC Wales Sport, denying that money worries were the reason behind the decision to stick with one overseas player this season. "We also have in Sophia Gardens a considerable asset, and we have started plans to sweat that asset.
"That will involve engaging with a number of companies to utilise our off-field facilities.
"We are going to build the infrastructure and take the steps necessary for England to play Test matches here.
"That would be a wonderful achievement for Glamorgan and for Wales."
