 | | Tuesday, 8 January, 2002, 09:44 GMT Derrick handed coaching reins  John Derrick is delighted to be in charge Glamorgan have announced the appointment of John Derrick as their new coach for the 2002 season. The 38-year-old Welshman replaces Jeff Hammond, who retired from cricket at the end of last season, and has agreed a two-year deal. It will be the third spell in charge for Cwmaman-born Derrick, who also coached Glamorgan during the 1996 and 1998 campaigns. Derrick said: "I am looking forward to it. I have done it before as a sort of stand-in (for Duncan Fletcher), but now I will be doing it on a full-time basis. " I am still young in cricketing terms, and I have learned from coaches who have come to the club. "The championship is the main aim for us and we will be looking to get back into the First Division."
He said: "When I finished playing I wanted to help Glamorgan in any way I could. I've never had a problem working where the county wants me." Derrick spent the last two seasons as second-team coach, and next term they will be captained by wicketkeeper Adrian Shaw. Shaw will also help with coaching, and could receive help from Academy Director Steve Watkin. Glamorgan captain Steve James said: "I'm delighted that John's hard work and progress in recent years have been rewarded with this role. "I think he'll do a great job: he's Glamorgan through and through, knows each player's strengths and weaknesses and I'm really looking forward to working with him." The appointment of Derrick, plus the return of batsman David Hemp, leaves just one question mark over Glamorgan's 2002 season. The decision on an overseas player to replce Jimmy Maher will be made in the near future, with Australian bowler Damien Fleming and Pakistani all-rounder Wasim Akram among those mentioned. | |
