New Zealander Martin played for Warwickshire in 2008 |
Essex have signed New Zealand pace bowler Chris Martin as temporary overseas cover for Danish Kaneria. The 35-year-old is expected to join the squad in time for their County Championship match with Lancashire on 21 April, subject to gaining a visa. Martin is expected to be with Essex until 7 May, meaning he will be available for their trip to Yorkshire. He has been drafted in to replace Kaneria who is committed to domestic duties in his native Pakistan. Essex first team coach Paul Grayson said: "We are delighted that Chris will be joining us. He is a top-class bowler and is keen to play County Championship cricket. "Chris will be a good replacement in this interim period and we look forward to welcoming him to Essex ahead of the Lancashire game." Martin has taken 181 wickets in 56 tests for New Zealand at an average of 35.03. He has experience of the English domestic scene, having spent 2008 with Warwickshire.
