Essex seamer Darren Thomas has been forced to retire after failing to recover from a shoulder injury. The 32-year-old, who joined Essex from Glamorgan in December, picked up the injury in February and was unable to bowl for the first team.
Thomas took 504 first-class wickets at 31.79 during his career.
Essex have also decided not to offer 25-year-old seamer Andrew McGarry, who has not played since breaking a hand in May, a new contract.
Chief executive David East said: "It's been a very frustrating year for Darren. He came to us with high hopes but unfortunately the shoulder injury he picked up pre-season in Chennai has meant that he has missed the whole season. The club wish him well in his future career.
"Andrew McGarry came in at a difficult time for us when we had picked up some serious injuries and unfortunately then picked one up himself.
"I'm sure he'll be welcomed back during pre-season next year, but at the moment won't be on the full-time staff."
