Essex have signed South Africa fast bowler Andre Nel as a temporary overseas player, subject to the player being granted a work permit. Nel will replace Andre Adams while the all-rounder is away with New Zealand during their scheduled one-day international series in Zimbabwe.
Nel is due to be available for Essex for the match against Derbyshire starting on August 16.
His final match would be against Australia on September 3.
Essex chief executive David East said: "We are delighted to have secured the services of an international-class fast bowler.
"Andre will offer us an extra injection of pace into our attack at what will be a crucial stage in our season.
"We wish him all the best during his stay with the Club."
Nel represented Northamptonshire in 2003 but has improved enormously in the last 12 months.
In his last Test match, against West Indies in Barbados, he collected a match haul of 10-88.
