South African batsman Herschelle Gibbs will not be joining Durham this season so he can take a break from the game. Gibbs picked up a hamstring injury in South Africa and the UCB recommended that he rest ahead of the upcoming tour to Sri Lanka.
Australian Marcus North, who was in as cover for Gibbs at Durham for the start of the season, could now remain there.
Meanwhile, Durham have also signed Pakistani fast bowler Tahir Mughal as short term bowling cover.
Durham head coach Martyn Moxon said, "It is a blow to lose a player of Herschelle's ability especially without him playing a game.
"Fortunately, Marcus North is in fine form at the moment and we can now take time to consider all our options over the coming weeks."
