Cork's contract has been ended by mutual consent |
Derbyshire have paid tribute to Dominic Cork after releasing him from the last two years of his contract. Cork, 32, asked to leave when Dave Houghton's appointment as director of cricket put his captaincy in doubt.
He is now free to speak to other clubs, with Hampshire, Nottinghamshire and Lancashire all tipped as possibilities.
"Everyone at the County Ground sends Dominic their thanks, and hope that he thoroughly enjoys the remainder of his career," said chairman Trevor Bowring.
"Whilst in many ways this is a very sad day for the club, we believe that this marks the beginning of a new era."
Australian batsman Michael di Venuto was on Monday named captain for 2004.
In a club statement, Cork said he had thoroughly enjoyed his 16 years with the county, including 13 seasons in the 1st XI and six summers as captain.
"I will always hold fond memories of the time I have spent there," Cork went on.
"The time is right for me for a new challenge, but I wish everyone at Derby all the very best for the future."
