LV= COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP, DIVISION ONE, Headingley: Close day one: Durham 326-9 v Yorkshire Yorks 3pts, Durham 3pts Match scorecard
Opener Michael Di Venuto hit 74 off 84 balls as Durham ended day one of their Division One clash with Yorkshire at Headingley on 326-9. Di Venuto put on a century partnership with Will Smith for the opening wicket before Durham collapsed to 134-6. But Liam Plunkett (65 no) and stand-in wicketkeeper Michael Richardson (67) led the fightback as Graham Onions made his return from injury. Rich Pyrah and Ryan Sidebottom claimed three wickets apiece for Yorkshire. Onions is making his first appearance for Durham since suffering a back injury which has prevented him from playing since England's drawn Test match with South Africa in Cape Town in January 2010. Richardson, son of former South Africa wicketkeeper Dave, was only called up as a last-minute replacement for skipper Phil Mustard, who was denied his 100th consecutive appearance by a sore toe. But, with Durham struggling at 123-5, he showed great composure to hit 10 fours and a six before guiding a Pyrah ball to Anthony McGrath at second slip. The visitors, who had won the toss, had raced to 82-0 after 18 overs before Yorkshire called on leg-spinner Adil Rashid and Pyrah, who claimed the wickets of Di Venuto and Gordon Muchall before lunch. Yorkshire continued to squeeze the visitors in the afternoon as Patterson's direct hit from mid-on ran out Smith and Sidebottom removed stand-in captain Dale Berkenstein for a duck. But, after the impressive showing from Richardson, Plunkett then put on a record ninth-wicket stand against Yorkshire with Callum Thorp of 94 to leave Durham with a decent first-innings total.
