Jimmy Adams hit a century as Hampshire batted out the final day at the Rose Bowl to draw with Durham.

With Hampshire resuming on 87-0, needing 403 more to win, a draw was always the most likely result unless Durham made early inroads.

And so it proved as Adams (105) and Liam Dawson (70) took their opening partnership to 171.

Johannes Myburgh and Neil McKenzie also frustrated Durham before the teams shook hands with Hampshire on 345-5.

Durham were not helped in their pursuit of victory by an injury to former England paceman Steve Harmison, who, having damaged his forearm while batting on the first day, bowled only three overs.

They had to wait until two balls after lunch for their first breakthrough when Dawson, who also made 50 in the first innings, turned leg spinner Scott Borthwick to substitute fielder Joe Coyne at short leg.

Adams also fell to Borthwick when he swept to Liam Plunkett at fine leg with the score on 242, but not before completing his 12th first-class century off 236 balls, with 19 fours.

Myburgh immediately edged Ian Blackwell to Michael Di Venuto at slip for 42 before Ben Stokes brilliantly caught James Vince in the covers off Blackwell.

And when McKenzie (43) guided Plunkett to wicketkeeper Phil Mustard down the leg side to leave Hampshire 312-5, Durham had a glimmer of hope.

But Nic Pothas and Sean Ervine held firm until the close, with their side 145 adrift of their victory target.

Hampshire batsman Jimmy Adams told BBC Radio Solent:
"It was nice to start the season with a few runs and obviously good that it's helped us to record a draw.

"They played the majority of the cricket, especially for the first three days, so it is a relief to come out with something.

"We're reasonably happy with how things have gone so we will be looking to build on that in the coming weeks."

Durham coach Geoff Cook told BBC Sport:
"I hope the game isn't just remembered for five sixes in one over (from Ben Stokes) his whole contribution was a lot more than that.

"He got 130, six wickets and a catch on a very placid pitch.

"I thought it was a really good game of cricket, on the first day and a half it was a good wicket to play on, but as the game wore on it was a little bit slow."
