Will Gidman was the stand-out player as Gloucestershire closed on 224-6 on a quiet opening day against Derbyshire.

With Gloucestershire struggling on 65-5, Gidman (89) came to their rescue, sharing a sixth-wicket partnership of 156 with Jonathan Batty (61 not out).

Gidman hit 12 fours in his three-and-a-half hour stay at the crease, while Batty's innings has already lasted four hours and contained six fours.

Tony Palladino and Jonathan Clare both took two wickets for Derbyshire.
