COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE, Old Trafford: CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY TWO: Nottinghamshire 89-2 Match scorecard
Paul Franks guides the ball past Karl Brown at Old Trafford
Nottinghamshire suffered further frustration at Old Trafford, as just 27 overs were possible on day two of their match with Lancashire. No play was possible before tea, after which Paul Franks (40) and Alex Hales (36) took their opening stand to 75. Incredibly, bright sunshine then caused a further delay before Notts moved to 89-2 before the close. Nottinghamshire have also seen their two-point lead at the top of the County Championship overhauled by Somerset. Notts will be crowned champions if they take a 22-point return from Old Trafford, but with so much time already lost, it will take some effort for the visitors to force a result. And with rivals Somerset and Yorkshire making good progress in their games against Durham and Kent respectively, Notts' title hopes are beginning to look bleak. | 606: DEBATE Stuart Broads Hair Stylist |
After just one over was possible on day one, Hales and Franks began with unsurprising vigour when the action finally commenced on day two, bringing up their half-century stand in just nine overs. Despite the soggy conditions, the pitch is dry and left-arm spinner Gary Keedy immediately found some turn to force Hales to edge behind. Franks was also caught behind, this time off the medium pace of Tom Smith, but Nottinghamshire's frustration was compounded soon after when the action was suspended because sunlight reflecting off the roof of the media centre was hampering the sight of the players. A 25-minute delay followed, after which Mark Wagh and Adam Voges took Notts through to stumps.
