COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE, Headingley: CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY TWO: Yorkshire 261, Kent 216-6 Yorks 4pts, Kent 4pts Match scorecard
Martin van Jaarsveld has played nine Test matches for South Africa
Three wickets for young swing bowler Moin Ashraf ensured Yorkshire finished the second day of the vital match against Kent with a marginal advantage.
Steven Patterson (39 not out) helped Yorkshire extend their first innings from 205-7 overnight to 261 all out.
But Martin van Jaarsveld looked to be turning the match Kent's way before Ashraf had him caught behind for 89.
Ashraf also dismissed Darren Stevens and Geraint Jones before the visitors closed on 216-6, still 45 behind.
The Bradford-born 18-year-old, who had earlier featured in a stand of 52 for the last wicket, finished the second day with figures of 3-16 in nine overs in only his second Championship appearance.
Rain and a wet ground meant the second day could not get under way until after an early lunch had been taken.
Hopes that Jonny Bairstow could go on to complete a maiden century were dashed when he managed to add only one to his overnight 63 before he was caught at second slip off Dewald Nel.
In his next over, Nel claimed a sixth wicket for the first time in his career as Oliver Hannon-Dalby fell lbw but Ashraf gave valuable support to Patterson in a stand which earned Yorkshire an unexpected second batting bonus point.
Spinner James Tredwell was called upon for his first bowl of the innings and his third delivery had Ashraf nicking a catch to wicketkeeper Geraint Jones.
The pitch, less green than on the first day, had lost some of its pace and Sam Northeast and Joe Denly made a promising start to Kent's reply.
Yorkshire were in need of a breakthrough and it came from Hannon-Dalby, who had Denly taken at third slip by Adil Rashid.
In the following over, Ajmal Shahzad accounted for Northeast, superbly caught by Gerard Brophy diving low to his right in front of first slip.
Kent's innings was bolstered by some attractive batting by Van Jaarsveld in an 83 stand in 18 overs with Rob Key.
Rashid trapped Key lbw for 25 with a googly before Ashraf struck twice, trapping Stevens lbw before he had scored and bowling Jones with a perfect yorker.
Kent hit back with a sixth-wicket stand between Van Jaarsveld and Alex Blake, but Ashraf rejoined the attack to deny Van Jaarsveld his century.
