Lewis has now taken 49 Championship wickets this season |
Jon Lewis kept Gloucestershire's promotion hopes alive with four wickets on day one against Leicestershire. Lewis took 4-42, while there were two wickets for Anthony Ireland, as the home side were dismissed for 295, with Tom New top-scoring with 63. Nathan Buck then reduced the visitors to 10-2, getting rid of Will Porterfield and Chris Dent cheaply. But Jonathan Batty (24no) and Hamish Marshall (19no) saw Gloucestershire to the close on 54-2, trailing by 241. Earlier, Leicestershire who won the toss, looked set to post a below-par score as they stumbled to 36-3 and 167-6, despite 46 from Jacques du Toit and 43 from Paul Nixon. They were pulled out of deep trouble by New's 99-ball innings which contained 11 fours, before he fell to Ireland (2-71). Leicestershire were also helped by Claude Henderson's quick-fire 33, Nadeem Malik's 34 and a career-best 26 from Buck, to push them five short of a third batting point. Buck then picked up two early Gloucestershire wickets to crown a memorable day for the teenager.
