COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE, Liverpool: Hampshire 160, Lancashire 124-2 (Lancs 3pts, Hants 0pts) Match scorecard
Lancashire took control of their County Championship match against Hampshire as 12 wickets fell in the day at Aigburth. Kyle Hogg and Tom Smith shared seven wickets as they skittled former team-mate Dominic Cork's men for just 160. Hogg finished with a season's best 4-53 , while Smith took 3-40, taking advantage of some movement after home skipper Glen Chapple had won the toss. Lancashire then cruised to 124-2 by the close, former captain Mark Chilton ending the day unbeaten on 47. Conditions for batting were not easy, with pace and carry, uneven bounce at times and sideways movement. But, despite Cork trapping Paul Horton lbw early in Lancashire's reply, the home side responded with authority, as Chilton closed in on his fourth half century in his last seven innings. Hampshire, who won on this ground in the same fixture last season, had made a commanding start thanks to Michael Carberry (30) and Australian Phil Hughes (20), following the early loss of Jimmy Adams. But, from 62-1, they then lost five wickets for just one run in 16 balls to collapse to 63-6. Carberry was caught behind by Gareth Cross off Hogg, who then trapped Neil McKenzie leg before for a three-ball duck in the same over. Hughes then edged to first slip in the next over by Smith, who trapped Sean Ervine lbw next ball for a golden duck. Wicketkeeper Michael Bates then completed the clatter of wickets when he edged Smith to second slip. Debutant Chris Wood then top scored with 35, sharing crucial eighth and ninth wicket stands of 30 and 43 with Cork and James Tomlinson, to at least bring some respectability top the visitors' score. Chapple claimed two wickets but struggled for much of the innings with an ankle problem.
