COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION TWO, Derby: CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY ONE: Middlesex 228-3 Derbys 1pt, Middlesex 1pt Match scorecard
Newman faced 185 balls for his unbeaten 119 |
Scott Newman hit an unbeaten century to give Middlesex control over Derbyshire on a rain-shortened first day at Derby. Newman, who was dropped on 15 by Greg Smith, hit 119 not out to take the visitors to 228-3 in the 61 overs that were possible. Dawid Malan (41) also contributed, while Steffan Jones, Graeme Wagg and Wes Durston each picked up one wicket. Derbyshire currently lie bottom of Division Two, 19 points behind eighth-placed Surrey. Newman scored just 20 runs in the morning session and saw John Simpson edge Jones behind and Owais Shah well caught at third slip by Durston off Wagg. He was put down by Smith at mid off from the bowling of Tim Groenewald and made Derbyshire pay by plundering 99 runs in the afternoon session. Newman and Malan added 139 in 32 overs for the third wicket but were parted when Malan dragged a drive from Durston's off-spin onto his stumps. Only four more overs were possible after Malan's demise, with the umpires eventually abandoning play at 1645 BST.
