COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE, Taunton: CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY ONE: Somerset 287-4 Durham Somerset 2pts, Durham 1pt Match scorecard
Trescothick has now scored 1,260 Championship runs this season |
Marcus Trescothick's one-man campaign to keep Somerset in the title race continued when the captain smashed a quickfire century against Durham. The former England opener followed his unbeaten 228 against Essex last week by hitting 128 off 175 balls. He received solid support from Arul Suppiah (54) and Nick Compton (45) before falling to Dale Benkenstein. Somerset closed on 287-4 with Craig Kieswetter unbeaten on 27 and Zander De Bruyn on 18. Trescothick took his run tally in his last five LV County Championship innings to 551 after play did not start until 1.10pm because of rain, but only 15 overs were lost. As is so often the case at Taunton, a green-looking did not offer as much assistance to the seamers as its appearance suggested. Suppiah helped his captain put on 119 for the first wicket before being trapped lbw by a delivery from former team-mate Ian Blackwell. Trescothick and Compton then put together a second wicket stand of 113 before the latter aimed to clip Benkenstein on the leg side and Scott Borthwick took a sharp catch at short mid-wicket. Trescothick reached his hundred off 149 balls, with 17 fours, but soon afterwards drove in the air to extra cover where Mark Stoneman took a comfortable catch. Somerset were suddenly 249 for four when James Hildreth was yorked by Matthew Claydon for seven.
