Chanderpaul has scored heavily for Lancashire in recent matches |
Lancashire's top four batsmen all scored half centuries to frustrate Championship leaders Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge. The Red Rose county finished the first day on 300-6 after winning the toss. Openers Paul Horton (51 off 57 balls) and Tom Smith (61) added 87 for the first wicket. Overseas batsman Shiv Canderpaul hit 92 and Mark Chilton finished 61 no, but Notts hit back with Andre Adams (3-68) taking two late wickets. Chanderpaul looked set for his third century in five matches before he was lbw to Ryan Sidebottom, ending a third-wicket stand of 151 with Chilton - Lancashire's highest partnership for any wicket this season. Sidebottom (3-74) and Adams were the main threat all day, with Adams poised on a hat-trick when play begins on day two. Lancashire got off to a flying start after winning the toss with Horton taking advantage of some poor new-ball bowling from Darren Pattinson. Horton reached his first 50 since late June off just 53 balls with eight fours before he was trapped lbw by a delivery from Adams which kept low. Adams was then left cursing his luck as second slip Steven Mullaney dropped both Smith and Chilton in his next two overs, with Chilton having made just one at the time. After lunch Sidebottom found some extra bounce to draw Smith into a cut shot which was edged to Alex Hales at first slip. Chilton ground his way to 50 off 142 balls in the final session before Chanderpaul was undone by the new ball, with Sidebottom swinging a full delivery into the batsman's pads to send the Guyanese back to the dressing room having faced 171 balls and hit 13 fours. After a 25-minute break just before the close for bad light, Nottinghamshire hit back with three wickets in eight balls, Sidebottom finding Steven Croft's edge for a sharp catch at third slip by Adams, with the Kiwi then removing Gary Keedy lbw and Gareth Cross first ball caught at first slip.
