COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION TWO, New Road: CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY ONE: Worcestershire 308 v Surrey 12-0 Worcs 3pts, Surrey 3pts Match scorecard Worcestershire's James Cameron hits a six on day one against Surrey
James Cameron led a recovery for Worcestershire on day one of their County Championship match with Surrey. Cameron (95) came to the crease with the home side struggling on 106-5 and shared a sixth-wicket partnership of 105 with opener David Wheeldon (65). Worcestershire were eventually bowled out for 308 as Chris Tremlett (4-45), Jade Dernbach (3-78) and Gareth Batty (3-68) shared the wickets. Surrey reached stumps on 12-0, trailing by 296 runs. On a pitch with some pace and carry, Worcestershire's decision to bat initially looked to have backfired. | 606: DEBATE |
Tremlett got rid of opener Daryl Mitchell for five in the third over, before Batty dismissed Vikram Solanki for 37 in his first game since resigning as Worcestershire captain. Batty picked up his second wicket when Moeen Ali was given out padding up in the off-spinner's fifth over, and when Shakib Al Hasan fell to Tremlett, Worcestershire were 84-5. But Surrey's momentum ran out in a frustrating afternoon session as the home side dug in to pass 300. Ben Cox made a useful 18 and Gareth Andrew (24) put on 42 with Cameron for the eighth wicket. Cameron, in his first season in England after playing grade cricket in Western Australia, surpassed a previous best of 89 against Derbyshire but was cruelly dismissed for 95.
BBC Hereford and Hereford and Worcester's Dave Bradley: "James Cameron and David Wheeldon got Worcestershire out of a mess after some of the top order went cheaply. "One or two played shots that they might look back on and regret and at least one got what looked like a poor decision. "Shakib Al Hasan is without doubt a talented player but, coming in with his team in trouble, he seemed to think he was playing in a limited-overs game. "Wheeldon's marathon was a model of concentration and Cameron certainly deserved his maiden century and he is fast establishing himself as the find of the season at New Road. "Surrey rotated the bowlers with Tremlett a constant threat, earning his final figures, and enhancing his chances of being on the plane to Australia in the winter, where the bounce he gets from his height and pace could be useful on hard pitches."
