Ali Brown top scored for Nottinghamshire as the Championship leaders shaded the opening day against Warwickshire at Trent Bridge.

Brown (76) and Chris Read (45) helped Notts recover from a delicate 165-5, after Mark Wagh (54) had scored his second half century of the season.

Chris Woakes and Boyd Rankin both took three wickets as the Division One's basement club dismissed Notts for 328.

The visitors negotiated six overs to close on 13-0, trailing by 315 runs.

Notts, who lost to Somerset in Saturday's FP t20 semi-final at the Rose Bowl, won the toss and elected to bat.

Despite scoring initially at more than five an over, their familiar problems at the top of the order struck again.

Alex Hales and Matt Wood were both dismissed cheaply by the new ball pair of Rankin and Woakes, with the batsmen unable to resist chasing swinging deliveries to be caught by wicketkeeper Tim Ambrose.

Wagh and Samit Patel (34) looked more comfortable as Notts continued to score quickly, passing 100 inside 22 overs, but the medium pace of Darren Maddy accounted for Patel soon after.

David Hussey should have followed three balls later, only for Clarke to drop his edged cut shot at slip.

The Australian made 34 before Woakes found Hussey's inside edge to play on, and the England Lions seamer then had Wagh caught by a tumbling Maddy at first slip to reduce Notts to 165-5.

Brown and Read put on 83 in 18 overs for the sixth wicket, the highest partnership of the innings, before Read, dropped by Maddy on 11, was bowled by the same man an over before tea.

Paul Franks fall lbw to Imran Tahir for 17 and Andre Adams was bowled by Rikki Clarke for six, but Ryan Sidebottom hit four boundaries in his 50-minute stay at the crease, to help Notts claim a third batting bonus point.

Notts batsman Ali Brown told BBC Radio Nottingham:
"I think that's above par, it's a wicket that has seamed about a little bit and is a little bit green.

"I think we are hopeful to bowl them out for less than that. This is the kind of wicket where there's a ball there with your name on it.

"It is a wicket you have to work hard on. If someone puts the ball in the right area they can take your wicket."
