Monty Panesar celebrates having Jonathan Clare caught behind

Promotion-chasing Sussex totally dominated Division Two bottom side Derbyshire on day one at Horsham.

Wes Durston made 69 and Steve Adshead 49 as Derbyshire were bowled out for 242, with only three other men reaching double figures.

Monty Panesar and Yasir Arafat each took three wickets, Luke Wright and Corey Collymore both taking two.

Chris Nash (81 not out) and Ed Joyce (69 not out) then took Sussex to 170-0 at stumps, just 72 behind.

Greg Smith, in charge of Derbyshire for the first time since replacing Chris Rogers, had no hesitation in batting first but saw his side slump to 96-6.

Collymore trapped openers Wayne Madsen and Chesney Hughes lbw, Smith and Dan Redfern were both caught behind off Luke Wright, while Panesar accounted for Jonathan Clare and Robin Peterson.

Durston had seen much of the carnage unfold from the non-striker's end, but he countered-attacked after lunch in a stand of 102 with Adshead before being yorked by Arafat.

Arafat and Panesar combined to mop up the tail, which included Paul Borrington, who had flown in for the game after Rogers was ruled out with tonsilitis.

Derbyshire's struggles were then put into perspective by Nash and Joyce, who compiled Sussex's first century opening stand since the final game of last season.
