Kent recover after Somerset's Ben Phillips strikes
COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE, Canterbury: CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY TWO: Somerset 380, Kent 175-3 Somerset 5pts, Kent 2pts Match scorecard
Phillips has previously had spells with Kent and Northants
Martin van Jaarsveld and Geraint Jones rescued Kent after Somerset paceman Ben Phillips had them in trouble on a rain-affected second day at Canterbury.
After Somerset moved from 363-7 to 380 all out, Phillips (3-42) struck three times to reduce the visitors to 47-3.
But Van Jaarsveld (70 not out) and Jones (49 not out), who were both dropped, then combined for a fourth-wicket stand of 128.
Kent had reached 175-3 when rain forced a premature close.
Somerset had added just three runs to their overnight score when Craig Kieswetter edged Azhar Mahmood (3-65) through to wicketkeeper Jones, with Amjad Khan (3-89) then mopping up the tail.
In reply, Kent were soon in trouble as Phillips posed consistent problems by swinging the ball at a full length.
Joe Denly was well caught behind by Kieswetter, while Sam Northeast and Rob Key were both trapped lbw in successive overs.
Van Jaarsveld and Jones survived until lunch, which was followed by a 15-minute delay for rain, and through the afternoon session despite strong appeals for leg before against both men.
In the evening session Van Jaarsveld was put down by Murali Kartik in the slips, with Zander de Bruyn grassing Jones at short extra cover, but they were still together when rain wiped out the last 33 overs of the day.
