David Hussey hit a double century to put second-placed Nottinghamshire in firm control over Division One leaders Yorkshire on day two at Headingley.

Hussey finished the day unbeaten on 222 from 232 balls - an individual best for Nottinghamshire against Yorkshire.

He shared stands of 184 with Samit Patel (96), 114 with Chris Read (42) and an unbroken 97 with Paul Franks (57 not out).

This all helped Notts to 497-6 at the close, a first-innings lead of 319.

Morning rain prevented any play until 1330 BST, by which time 21 overs had been lost.

Hussey launched an immediate assault as England's Ajmal Shahzad conceded 15 runs in two overs and spinner David Wainwright was straight driven for four and six in an over which cost 18.

The Australian should have been run out on 93 as Wainwright missed a chance at the stumps following a throw by Anthony McGrath.

There was also an escape for Patel when on 76, as he hooked at Oliver Hannon-Dalby and Shahzad badly misjudged the chance at long leg.

Hussey then pulled Hannon-Dalby for four to reach his fourth century in his last five Championship innings against Yorkshire.

But Patel failed to reached three figures as he became Adil Rashid's 50th Championship wicket of the season.

Patel and Hussey's partnership became a Notts record for the fourth wicket against Yorkshire, exceeding the 169 by Willis Walker and Arthur Staples at Sheffield in 1931.

Read and Hussey then put on 114 for the fifth wicket in 28 overs, before Shahzad picked up his only wicket of the day, getting rid of Read.

Hussey continued to hammer the home side's bowling, hitting four sixes in all, and in the process overhauled Nottinghamshire's previous highest individual score against Yorkshire of 220 not out by Tim Robinson at Trent Bridge in 1990.

Three consecutive fours for Franks in the final over of the day from Adam Lyth exceeded Notts' previous highest total against the Tykes of 492-5 declared at Sheffield in 1949.

Nottinghamshire batsman David Hussey told BBC Radio Nottingham:

"Headingley is a good place to play cricket, there's something in it with the ball and always something in it with the bat.

"Full credit to our bowlers for bowling them out cheaply in the first innings and we were lucky enough to cash in on some tired bowling at the end of the day.

"I think it has been a great day for Notts, but we now need to bowl them out for an innings win."
